Condition

Concussion

A concussion needs a real exam and a return-to-play path. A laptop test in a school library is often not enough to guide that decision.

How CIHW approaches concussion

Concussion in this institute

Clinical evaluation, a usable baseline when we can get one, and a return-to-learn / return-to-play path. Speaking engagements for clubs and schools are part of how this institute gives back.

First visit for concussion

  1. 01The hit, the symptoms now, and whether a school laptop baseline even exists.
  2. 02Cognition, balance, neck, and visual-vestibular exam - compared to our file if we already have one.
  3. 03Return-to-learn first, then return-to-play. No same-week clearance on “I feel fine.”

A concussion is a brain injury. The school click-test is often invalid.

Dr. Mitchell has told local programs for years that many computerized baselines cannot guide return-to-play. Families from Algonquin, Huntley, and Crystal Lake use this West Dundee clinic for a clinical athletic baseline they can actually compare after a hit.

Second impact before recovery is the danger. Symptoms can lag. Athletes minimize. We will not clear on vibes.

01

Can we get a baseline before the season?

Yes. That is the point of /services/baseline-testing. After a hit we compare to that file.

02

Is this the same as ImPACT at school?

Usually no. We explain what a computer test can and cannot do, then we run a clinical exam.
